Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about XML sitemaps and how to optimize your site for search engines.

An XML sitemap is a file that lists all important pages on your website, helping search engines like Google and Bing discover and index your content more efficiently. It's essential for SEO, especially for large websites, new sites, or sites with complex navigation structures.

Update your sitemap whenever you add new pages, remove old ones, or make significant changes to your site structure. For blogs or news sites that publish daily, consider regenerating your sitemap automatically. For mostly static sites, updating monthly or when making changes is sufficient.

Priority (0.0 to 1.0) indicates the relative importance of pages on your site—1.0 for your homepage, 0.8 for main sections, etc. Change frequency (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) tells search engines how often a page typically updates. Both are hints to search engines, not guarantees.

A single sitemap file is limited to 50,000 URLs and 50MB in size. If you exceed these limits, use our Sitemap Splitter tool to automatically divide your sitemap into multiple files and generate a sitemap index file.

Absolutely safe! All processing happens entirely in your browser—we never upload your data to any server. Your sitemaps and URLs stay on your device. You can even save your work locally using our history feature, which uses your browser's storage (IndexedDB).

Upload your sitemap.xml file to your website's root directory (e.g., https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml). Then submit the URL to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Also add a reference in your robots.txt file.

Always use HTTPS URLs if your site supports it (which it should in 2025!). Search engines prioritize secure sites, and mixing HTTP and HTTPS can confuse crawlers.

Currently, SiteMapper Pro focuses on standard XML sitemaps for web pages. While you can add image and video URLs as regular entries, specialized image/video sitemap features with extended tags are planned for a future update.
